I was inspired to create a series of 12 landscapes, one for each month of the year and to make use of subjects and colours that I associate with every month. Each work was completed en plein air, in one sitting.
It was a very cold day in February when I completed this work, near the ruins of Egglestone Abbey. The scene was a collection of elements – the gentle flow of the river, the rolling hill that embraced the ruins, and the remnants of the old abbey. I wanted to capture the tranquillity and timelessness of the scene on the canvas through vibrant greens and earthy browns and I find the result very calming.
