"February" Still Life, Giclée Print

I was inspired to create a series comprising 12 paintings, each dedicated to a specific month of the year, making use of subjects and colours that I associate with each month.

This is the second painting in the series and because is still cold outside, I chose to depict an indoor scene, and one from the warmest places in the home: the kitchen. Food meets our needs on a physical level but it also warms our hearts and brings people together. I was reading a book about Van Gogh at the time of making the painting and I was inspired by his choice of colours and his use of brush strokes in a playful and liberating manner. 

In this artwork, a rustic scene unfolds with a wooden board at its centre, adorned with freshly baked homemade bread, a scattering of walnuts, and a wedge of creamy cheese. The bread is lovingly crafted, bearing the marks of a labour of love and the promise of warmth during the winter days of February. The walnuts add a touch of earthiness and wholesome simplicity. Their textured shells and earthy hues symbolize the season's transition from the cold of winter to the promise of spring. Completing the scene, a wedge of creamy blue cheese offers a delightful contrast in both colour and texture. Its luscious, marbled interior represents the richness of life's small pleasures.
