"May" Still Life, Giclée Print

I was inspired to create a series comprising 12 paintings, each dedicated to a specific month of the year, making use of subjects and colours that I associate with each month.

This painting is the 5th in the series. In May 2017, we spent our holiday in Italy, visiting Rome and many other beautiful small towns and villages. I was inspired by Italy's love for imperfections. The houses exteriors were not completely straight or uniformly painted. Part of the old paint would come off and the new coating would go on without fixing the old layers or making everything even. These imperfections which were allowed to be, added a particular charm to the streets that was so wonderful to witness. Many streets were as beautiful as an indoor space with numerous decorative elements in front of the house, such as the flower pots that I chose to put on canvas. I found this particular image in a small town called Civita del Bagnoregio, also known as the dying town. The old town, with only 12 permanent residents left is endangered due to erosion and lost almost a quarter of its surface in time. It is a unique and very special place, one of the most amazing places we've been to. Italy is heaven for artists and it's beauty does not cease to inspire me.
