The painting is part of a series of portraits of iconic people that influenced me and whom I admire. Nelson Mandela served as President of South Africa between 1994 and 1999 and to me he was the embodiment of forgiveness. He lived through very difficult times, fighting against oppression and towards racial reconciliation in South Africa.

After serving 27 years in prison which could have made him bitter and resentful, he chose to deliver a message of forgiveness, peace, national and racial reconciliation. He took on a difficult mission in which he was opposed by white and black communities alike. The country was also facing huge problems in terms of poverty, education, corruption, violence, problems which Mandela started to address to the best of his abilities while he kept delivering the message of forgiveness, the only real medicine for healing the past and moving towards a positive future. He remained true to his ideals of human equality, hope and harmony among people of different backgrounds. The painting always reminds me of these ideals.

I chose colours and patterns for the clothing which are representative of his style, as he often wore colourful Batik shirts. I also aimed to reflect kindness and forgiveness in his eyes and expression and I am very satisfied with the end result.
