The "I am" project is a series of five images that depict the connection between a specific type of tree and a meaningful affirmation, with the intent to explore the profound meanings and wisdom that I believe can be attributed to trees. These affirmations are rooted in my Christian faith. By anchoring affirmations in deep personal convictions, they can strengthen our identity and remind us of the truth we carry within.

I am enough

Maple trees are diverse, ranging from towering 45-meter giants to shrubs with ground-level trunks. I chose the maple tree to symbolize the affirmation "I am enough," a crucial belief for everyone. Growing up, many of us internalize the false notion that we are not enough due to a lack of unconditional love. This leads to self-doubt and distorted self-images. We can actually change our perspective and recognize our inherent worth, independent of others' opinions. Changing our self-perception transforms our lives.

I am strong

This image represents the oak tree, a symbol of strength. Oak trees have very hard wood and can live up to 1000 years, making them perfect to accompany the affirmation “I am strong.” In a world full of challenges, we often feel powerless. This picture is a reminder of our inner strength, showing us that we are more resourceful than we realize, especially in tough times. I hope it serves as a daily reminder, helping everyone recognize and act on their inherent strength.

I am grateful

The picture of cherry blossoms represents the affirmation “I am grateful.” In Japan, the tradition of Hanami celebrates the cherry tree's fleeting beauty, symbolizing life's ephemeral nature. Inspired by this, the image encourages gratitude for the unique gifts and connections in our lives. Albert Einstein talked about how our lives are intertwined with others: “A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depend on the labours of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving." It is my hope that this work can inspire a daily sense of gratitude and thankfulness.

I am present

The willow tree, known for its ability to bend without breaking, symbolizes the affirmation “I am present.” Embracing the present moment, even with its challenges, brings peace and clarity. Often, we stress over past regrets or future worries, but true life is experienced in the now. This image serves as a reminder to stay grounded in the present, helping us navigate life's challenges with resilience and acceptance.

I am resilient

The wisteria, symbolizing resilience, can live over 100 years, with some specimens, like Japan's legendary 1200-year-old tree, showcasing its enduring strength. Its ability to thrive despite harsh conditions mirrors the human spirit's resilience. The wisteria’s dual nature—expressing sorrow and durability—demonstrates that resilience isn't just about surviving but flourishing despite hardships. Its graceful endurance teaches us to see challenges as opportunities for growth, embodying the affirmation “I am resilient.”
