The Little Prince, Giclée Print

This artwork is inspired by the French book “The Little Prince”, written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, which is one of my favourite books. It is a philosophical story with profound messages related to life and human nature. My admiration for the book lead me towards the idea of creating my own depiction of the book’s main character and his planet.

In the book, the young prince has his own small planet where he lives with a single rose. He arrives on Earth where he meets an aviator with whom he shares the things he had learnt while travelling on other planets, where he met all sorts of characters depicting “grown ups”. The little prince asked each character he met child – like questions in trying to understand why they had particular interest and such fixed ways of being. These conversations are inspiring and thought provoking in relation to how we choose to behave and live our adult lives. The themes of the book include those of love, friendship and separation, growing up, fear, happiness, sorrow and many others. Whenever I look at the painting it reminds me of the messages of the book: to consider what is truly important, to stop and enjoy the beauty and to question my way of doing things. In the scene that I chose to paint, the little prince is watching the sunset on his own planet, something that he enjoys doing very much and as often as possible. Due to the fact that his planet is so small, he can sometimes move his chair slightly to watch another one.

The subject was appealing, as well as challenging because it was an invitation to think about space, a subject that is less popular in the oil painting world. The use of traditional painting techniques, in relation to a modern – day subject are representative for my approach to painting and artistic practice.
